Pregnant mother Morgain Cole Abbot got a real surprise when she attended Colchester Zoo in Essex, the U.K. The mother was viewing a 48-year-old orangutan named Rajang when she pressed her baby bump to the glass. Rajang couldn’t take her eyes off it. He gently pet the glass as if to pet Morgain’s belly. Then all of a sudden, he kissed it.
The interaction was so touching, Morgain began to cry. It is no secret that primates are incredibly intelligent creatures, but in special moments like these, we witness how much we have in common with them. It’s as if all beings are awestruck by the miracle of life.
“I think I’m going to cry,” she says.
Morgain says the orangutan noticed that she was pregnant immediately. Rajang began pointing at her bump as soon as she stood in front of the glass. This isn’t the first time Rajang has reacted to a pregnant mother this way: expectant mom Kayley Bethany also had the pleasure of experiencing Rajang’s affection.
“I couldn’t believe it when he bent down to kiss it,” she told Daily Mail. “It was incredible and really showed his intelligence as he knew straight away I was pregnant and singled me out.”
The mother was so stunned by the incident, she and her husband plan to help raise money for the Orangutan Foundation.
“I really do hope some people have donated. If every person donated even one pound, it would have raised a brilliant amount for such a good cause,” Morgain said.
